Double-check that the appropriate microphone is selected in this submenu (click the down arrow to see all the options). You can also make sure that the correct microphone is selected under Google Hangouts settings, which is accessed by clicking on the cog icon at the top-right of the screen (in some browsers, this may be under the button with three vertical dots, again top-right). Also, ensure that you aren’t running any other programs that use the mic, and might be conflicting. Make sure that the microphone is connected properly (check the cable to the PC).

The first thing to do is go through the basics: check that you haven’t muted the mic (as described in the above section). Troubleshooting mic issuesīut what if your video call doesn’t appear to be functioning properly? One of the most common problems you might encounter is that your microphone doesn’t appear to be working, and the person you’re chatting with can’t hear you (or vice versa). If they click that link, they can then join the call directly from their email inbox (and what’s more they don’t have to be signed in to a Google account).Īfter a session has started, it’s also possible to invite more people to the call by using the icon of a person with a ‘+’ next to it (top-right of the screen), as we’ve already seen with text-based messaging. The recipient(s) will be alerted of your call, and can choose to answer it (or decline).Īlternatively, click on Copy Link to Share, and this will copy a link to the video chat session to your clipboard, which you can then paste in, say, an email, and send it to the person (or people) you wish to chat with. In the Invite People dialog box, type in the email address (or the name) of the person (or people – it’s possible to add multiple folks) you wish to contact, and click on them in the menu that pops up below. Make a video callĬlick on the icon for a Video Call and a separate window will pop up. While we'll all be along for the forced march to Google Chat, I'm not sure every conversation will really survive that change.(Image credit: Google) 3. It's nearly impossible to get people to move between messaging services once a group is entrenched, and for many of my friends and me, the transition to Hangouts last decade was permanent. I still use Hangouts daily, and while I'm sure that puts me in the minority, I doubt that I'm alone. But it was far from a failure, and sometimes I reflect on what Hangouts could have been if Google had redirected all the effort that went into Allo to iron out its issues. There's no getting around the fact that, even at the best of times, Hangouts was often a buggy and frustrating experience - if not an outright dumpster fire. Looking back across the last decade, it's easy to remember all the things Hangouts did right while glossing over its failings. A mere few months remain by that timeline as we all prepare to make the trip, which could happen any day now. Google has been explicit that the transition to Chat would happen officially sometime in the first half of 2021, with all our chat history, contacts, and conversations moving over. The company would spend the next two years transitioning and merging Hangouts bit by bit behind the scenes to its spun-off successor, as Allo was also finally killed when it failed to take off.

Remember that explicitly business-oriented Hangouts Chat service Google spun off? Turns out, that's where the consumer Hangouts would be going. On life support, Hangouts went months without bug fixes and lost features when it did get updated.ĭetails regarding the transition took years to trickle out, and Google went against its own claims more than once. One handled video conferencing, the other was a Slack-like service.įinally, SMS support in Hangouts was outright killed. Google Voice began disentangling itself from the Hangouts amalgamation in 2018 as Hangouts Chat debuted, and by the end of the year, Hangouts was rumored to be on the chopping block.

In 2017, as Hangouts languished in Google's forgotten pile of services, the company finally split Hangouts up, introducing new Hangouts Meet and Hangouts Chat services meant for business.
